The establishment of the Multinational Division North East Headquarters is a consequence of the NATO Summit in Warsaw in July 2016, when decisions about the enhanced forward military presence on the Alliance's eastern flank were made. It consists of four battalion-seized battle groups deployed in the Baltic States and Poland. For their coordination, the Headquarters of the Multinational Division North East was established.
On 3rd July 2017, in the Old Town of Elbląg, Multinational Division North East Headquarters was officially welcomed in the city. The ceremony ended the process of achieving Initial Capability by the Headquarters soldiers. Next, the unit accomplished its Full Capability through a series of evaluation events, the last of which took place during the Command Post Exercise phase of the Polish National Exercise Anakonda 18. During this last phase, MND-NE ran 24-hour operations from a Field Command Post, commanding several brigades and other units on the digital battlefield. On the 3rd January 2019, a ceremony was held in Elbląg, during which the Inspectorate for Armed Forces Support handed over the new Division Headquarters to use the 21st Supply Garrison Unit. The next step was to transfer MND-NE soldiers and equipment to the new location.
On Friday, the 1st of February, on the masts located in the new barracks, the flags of the member states of NATO were raised. This means that MND-NE officially started working in a new location. During the speech, the Division Commander Maj. Gen. Krzysztof Motacki emphasized that the ceremony begins the next stage of the operation, in which fully-prepared personnel can work in an environment adapted to his needs.
